Side effects and watch-outs

  • GI distress on initiation (nausea, diarrhoea — titrate slowly)
  • Vitamin B12 depletion with long-term use — supplement
  • Rare: lactic acidosis in renal impairment

  • ⚠️ Contraindicated in kidney disease (eGFR <30), liver disease, and excess alcohol use
